Automobile Safety

We use our cars virtually every day of our adult lives. Many of us spend an hour or more in them each day on the way to and from work. America has a prevailing culture of the car. So it’s important that, as much as we use them, we’re familiar with car safety and how to prevent accidents.

Every year in the United States, approximately 35,000 people die in car accidents. This is an especially tragic figure when you realize that car accidents are almost by definition preventable. Had all the drivers involved in accidents been practicing safe, responsible driving methods, this number could be drastically reduced, or even eliminated entirely. By following these simple steps, you can help do your part to reduce this statistic and make American roads a safer place to be:

Always wear your seat belt. According to studies, approximately half of the 35,000 annual car fatalities could have been prevented had the victims been wearing their safety belts. Many states now have laws on the books mandating the use of a seat belt, so using one is more than just being safe.

Keep your hands on the wheel. Many of us spend our time in the car eating, fiddling with the radio, or talking on the phone. The fact of the matter is that we need our hands to operate the car. Keep them on the wheel and you’ll be able to react to changes on the road immediately.

Speaking of eating, making calls, and messing with the radio, it’s important to keep your mind on the road at all times. Accidents occur when people aren’t expecting them, when people aren’t giving their driving duties the proper respect. Keep your focus on what’s happening around you, and you can predict and avoid accidents.
