Avoiding 18-Wheeler Accidents

While all motor vehicle accidents are dangerous, those which involve an 18-wheeler are especially so because of the substantial size and weight of such trucks. Although accidents involving large trucks may be the fault of the truck driver, the truck manufacturer, or the company whose goods are being shipped, accidents can also be caused by passenger car drivers. When driving on the freeway, it is important to understand the dangers posed by 18-wheelers and do your part to drive safely and avoid accidents.

If you have been hurt in a crash that was caused by the negligence of any party who was responsible for the condition or operation of an 18-wheeler, it may be appropriate to seek financial compensation through the civil justice system.

Drive Safely Near Large Trucks

Because of the large size and weight of 18-wheelers, they are particularly difficult to handle and have inherent dangers, including the following:

  • Extended braking times. Large trucks have difficulty slowing down and braking because of their large size and weight. When passenger cars cut too near the front of a truck when changing lanes, the truck may not be able to slow down in time to avoid a collision if the passenger car brakes suddenly.
  • Extended blind spots. The length and height of a truck add additional blind spots. Large trucks may have blind spots directly behind the truck, to the sides of the cab, toward the rear of the vehicle, and directly in front of the engine. Avoid driving in these spots, and make sure you can always see the truck’s mirrors, or the driver is unable to see you.

Do your part to avoid dangerous accidents by driving cautiously near large trucks.
