Fuel Spills

Our society depends on petroleum. If kept securely contained, the highly flammable byproducts of oil refining are relatively safe to use and be around. But when these flammable liquids get loose, they can pose a serious hazard for anyone nearby. The most obvious risk is the possibility of fire or explosions, but the vapors given off by many petroleum products are also hazardous to human health.

Crude oil is composed of a sea of different hydrocarbon chemicals. It is the job of oil refineries to separate these different components. All of these products are flammable, but some ignite more quickly than others. Things like jet fuel are made of the quickest-burning parts of the crude oil, whereas motor oil and diesel are made from the heavier components.

Dangers of Fuel Accidents

When something like jet fuel catches fire, the result is a high-intensity, quick-burning flame which can rapidly grow out of control. For people who work in aviation, a single spill can very quickly result in serious burns and smoke inhalation injuries for many workers. But even the heavier components of crude oil can get out of hand and cause serious injuries.

For automobile mechanics, rags covered in grease or motor oil are a serious hazard. These rags, if not properly contained, can quickly catch fire if exposed to a spark or flame. Since they are sometimes stored in hard-to-reach places, it can be difficult to combat such a fire once it begins. Likewise, any large diesel or gasoline spill should be handled by experts. Any attempt by someone without the proper training can easily go wrong and lead to serious burns to that person, as well as people nearby.
