Gas Leaks

Natural gas is an essential part of many people’s lives, even if they do not notice it. We use it to cook, to heat our homes, and to run our hot water tanks. Like any flammable substance, however, natural gas can be very dangerous. The most obvious risks are fire and explosions caused by gas buildup. However, many deaths caused by gas leaks come from suffocation. If you detect a gas leak, leave the area immediately and contact the authorities

On its own, natural gas has no scent. We are only able to smell it because natural gas producers add chemicals that our noses can detect. Otherwise gas leaks would often go unnoticed, resulting in many more fires and explosions. Despite this, it is possible to miss the scent of gas entirely, especially if your ability to smell is impaired. If you ever smell gas, it is recommended that you evacuate the area immediately. Do not use any electronic appliances or sources of fire.

Aside from the risk of fire and explosion, one of the greatest risks posed by gas leaks comes from the risk of suffocation. Natural gas can displace the oxygen in our lungs, quickly leading to unconsciousness. Without quick resuscitation and removal to a place with clean air, it’s only a matter of minutes before brain death sets in.

Safety standards require regular inspection of natural gas lines, but irresponsible conduct on the part of gas companies or building managers can allow leaks to go undetected. Although not every leak can be blamed on such negligence, any evidence of negligent behavior on the part of building managers or gas company employees should be noted.
