Pool Injuries
Pools are a popular staple of summer entertainment. They provide a great source of exercise as well as a way to cool off in the summer heat. While they are great, there are any number of injuries that can take place in the water, particularly to the head and neck.
One of the greatest risks to an individual’s head and neck in a pool occurs when the individual is underwater and pushes off from one wall. If there are any stairs in an unexpected place in the pool, not unheard of in some of the more randomly shaped pools, the individual can hit his or her head on the stairs or ledge. This can injure not only the head but can cause problems to the neck as well.
Another problem with pools stems from the hard surfaces found around them. Many people do not heed the warnings and rules against glass being used near the pool. As a result, it is not uncommon for glass items to break. At this point, it can be washed or knocked into the pool where it becomes a hazard to feet on the bottom of the pool.
Finally, the chlorine and other chemicals in the pool can result in irritation to the eyes and mucous linings of the nose and mouth. This is particularly true in the event that the pool has just been shocked. While chemicals are necessary to keep the water clean and not cloudy, they can burn the eyes and other parts of the body if the chemicals used are too strong.
