St. Patrick’s Day Safety
St. Patrick’s Day has become a de facto “day of drinking” for many Americans. Unlike many major holidays, many people begin drinking on St. Patrick’s Day in the morning and throughout the day, creating the potential for hazardous situations during the entire holiday.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly one third of all traffic fatalities on St. Patrick’s Day were the result of drunk drivers. There are a number of steps that you can follow to insure that you have a safe, fun and happy Saint Patrick’s Day.
- Assign a designated driver. This should go without saying, but this can be particularly difficult considering the all-day long nature of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
- Be sure to eat food and drink non-alcoholic beverages. Alternating one alcoholic beverage with one non-alcoholic beverage is a good way to ensure that you do not drink too much too quickly. Fortunately, many traditional St. Patrick’s Day foods such as fish and chips are good dishes to slow the body’s absorption of alcohol.
- Engage in physical activity. Take part in St. Patrick’s Day activities that involve exercise. Play games, walk in a parade, or dance. If these types of activities are not available, opt to walk to your destinations rather than using a cab or driving. The physical activity will help mitigate the effects of alcohol and will make you thirstier for non-alcoholic beverages.
