The Risks of Bedsores

As we age, our bodies become increasingly susceptible to conditions we have little to no concept of when we are younger. One prospect of old age that is particularly unsavory is being bedridden. For many bedridden individuals, retirement communities and elder care facilities can contribute to a person’s quality of life because of their excellent caretaking strategies. Unfortunately, not all facilities are as careful and pay as much attention as they should. As a result, the development of pressure ulcers, or bedsores, creates a very real problem for many elderly nursing home patients.

Has the negligence of nursing home employees caused your loved one to suffer? If so, you should contact the Philadelphia nursing home negligence attorneys of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C. Call 215-238-1130 to discuss your case with us today.

How Bedsores Develop

Pressure ulcers develop when a person who is bedridden or otherwise immobilized is not moved on a regular basis. When a person remains in the same position for hours or even days on end, areas of skin that are in contact with beds or wheelchairs can start to die. When an immobilized person is not moved regularly, their bedsores can develop into:

  • Gangrene
  • Sepsis
  • Bone Infections
  • Malignant transformation

These health risks can be fatal for those whose immune systems are not as capable, especially the elderly. It is recommended that patients who are unable to move themselves should be turned by medical staff every 2-4 hours.
