Types of Head Injuries
Although only affecting approximately .3% of the population, head injuries can be some of the most devastating injuries that can occur, with both short term and long term ramifications. Most commonly, head injuries result from traffic accidents, bicycle accidents, falls, and assaults. There are numerous types of head injuries that can occur with various consequences.
- Concussions: Concussions usually result from light to heavy head trauma when rotational forces act upon the brain. Concussions can have long-term affects, although brain imaging technology usually shows no long term structural damage. Symptoms can include headache, difficulty with balance, dizziness, irritability, difficulty focusing, and a loss of interest in activities.
- Hematomas: A hematoma is a rapid buildup of blood and may be either of the epidural or subdural variety, depending on where the bleeding is occurring. Both are considered severe and should be subject to immediate medical attention as major long-term injury can result.
- Contusions: A cerebral contusion is the bruising of brain tissue, which may cause the brain to swell, resulting in increased intracranial pressure. Most typically, contusions occur as a result of a blow to the head and may cause weakness, loss of memory, and a lack of coordination. Like hematomas, contusions necessitate intensive care and should be monitored closely.
