Whiplash Symptoms
Sometimes, victims of car accidents and other impact accidents sustain whiplash injuries. Whiplash injuries are strains or sprains to the neck, caused by an abrupt jerk of the neck beyond its normal range of motion. Whiplash can cause damage to neck muscles and ligaments, vertebrae discs and joints between the vertebrae, and the roots of nerves.
Although more common in high-impact events, whiplash can also occur after smaller accidents. The severity of the accident is not always directly correlated with the severity of the injury. In fact, even a car collision at a speed as low as 15 miles per hour can result in a whiplash injury. In addition, the person with the injury may not even realize they are injured for 24 hours or more.
Common Whiplash Indicators
Whiplash symptoms can include:
- Swelling, stiffness, tenderness, muscle spasms, and pain in the neck
- Pain in the shoulder, shoulder blade, or lower back
- Pain that shoots from the neck down to the shoulder or arm
- Tingling, numbness, weakness, or function loss in arms, legs, or hands
- Difficulty moving the head
- Headache, dizziness, blurred vision, or difficulty focusing or remembering
- Ringing in the ears
- Fatigue
- Sleep problems
If you experience any of these symptoms after an impact injury, it is important to seek medical assistance.
