Three people were injured Tuesday morning when a bus crashed into the side of a popular Philadelphia restaurant.

According to officials with the Philadelphia Police Department, a SEPTA bus crashed into the side of Monk’s Cafe in Center City shortly after 2:00 a.m. Tuesday. The bus driver and two Delaware River Port Authority officers, who were in a police SUV that was also involved in the crash, sustained minor injuries.

Police say there were no passengers on the bus when the accident occurred, and the few patrons and employees inside the restaurant were not injured in the crash.

Investigators say they are not sure what caused the accident, but Ed Kasuba, a DRPA spokesman, said the police SUV was responding to a 911 call at the time of the crash. A spokesman for SEPTA said it appeared the bus struck the front of the restaurant after it swerved to avoid the police vehicle.

17 Injured in Pittsburgh Steel Plant Explosion

Posted on July 14th, 2010 No Comments

Seventeen people were injured at a U.S. Steel plant near Pittsburgh when an oven exploded Wednesday, emergency officials said.

According to Allegheny County spokesman Kevin Evanto said the powerful blast in the coke oven at United States STeel Corp.’s Clairton Coke Works happened shortly after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Most of the workers suffered burns, Evanto said.

“It’s a miracle that anybody even walked away from that,” Allegheny County Emergency Services Chief Bob Full said.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration had a team of investigators on the site looking into the cause of the explosion. Allegheny County Air Quality Program manager Jim Thompson said a large cloud of smoke seen at the plant and other factors indicate the explosion may have been caused by the gas used to heat one of the coke ovens.
