Three Men Charged with Vehicular Homicide

Posted on March 18th, 2009 No Comments

Three men have been charged with vehicular homicide.  The charges come after an accident in a suburb of Philadelphia killed one person because of an unsafe tractor trailer on the road.

The three people charged in the fatal accident were the driver of the trailer truck,  the owner of the trailer truck, and the third person charged is a mechanic.  The mechanic is being charged because he apparently signed off on the safety of the trailer without even inspecting the truck.

An investigation into the trailer has revealed that the trailer was in no shape to be on the road.  None of the brake assemblies worked correctly and almost 1/3 of the brake assemblies for the trailer completely failed.

Woman Who Lost Parents in Crash Pushes for Cell Phone Legislation

Posted on March 13th, 2009 1 Comment

A young woman is beginning a campaign in Pennsylvania to prompt legislators to pass a bill restricting the use of a cell phone while driving.  The campaign that this young woman is working for started after she lost her parents in a car crash.  The driver of the vehicle that hit her parents was on a cell phone at the time of the accident.

This bill will likely raise opinions from both sides.  Cell phone usage while driving has been linked to an increased risk in accidents. Several states already have bans in place that restrict cell phone usage while driving.  Pennsylvania could be the next state to impose such a ban.

Report on Pennsylvania Teen Driving Deaths

Posted on March 13th, 2009 No Comments

A recent study has been released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.  The study had a focus on drivers between the ages of 15-17.

The study found that nearly one-third of the people who died in an accident involved the teenage driver, and the other 2/3 of the people who died were normally the passenger or other people involved.  In Pennsylvania,  since 1998 to 2007, over 980 people were killed in accident involving drivers between the ages of 15-17 years-of-age.

Law makers are looking at this and believe that they have a solution.  Placing restrictions on teenage and inexperienced drivers may help solve the problem.  It has been recommended that new drivers not be allowed to have passengers until a certain amount of time has passed.  This idea will allow the driver to focus solely on the road and not be distracted by others in the car.

Snowy Monday Brings Accidents

Posted on March 4th, 2009 No Comments

A recent snow storm that hit eastern parts of the state of Pennsylvania on Monday.  The snow storm brought around 1 to 3 inches of snow on Monday. This storm was the cause of many traffic and car accidents that occurred in the effected areas.

With the snow on the road,  driving conditions became difficult.  Accidents were up for the day across the state, with incidents being reported on Interstate 80 and other heavy traffic roads across the state. At least one case required hospitalization of the accident victim.

Many roads had their speed limits reduced for the day in an attempt to slow down drivers during the difficult driving conditions.
