State Bill to Limit Number of Passengers in Teen Car

Posted on April 27th, 2009 3 Comments

A new bill is currently being discussed in the state House.  The bill is aiming to make the number of passengers for a driver aged 16 to 17 to only be one.  The bill will only allow two total people in a car with a 16 or 17 year-old driver. The only real exception to the rule is that family members do not count.

The bill is also seeking to place restrictions on the use of cell phones and other devices in the car.  Cell phones , for example,  would be prohibited from use except under two circumstances.  First to call 911, or second to call for directions.

The bill is currently called  "Lacey's Law" after a teenage passenger that lost her life in a car where the driver was distracted.

Philadelphia police officers who were working with federal agents have been injured in an accident.  The police officers were working with the agents in arresting an individual who is wanted on an assault that took place in February.

As the officers were pursuing the suspect,  the man hit them with his mini-van.  After the accident, the man and another passenger were arrested and taken into custody.   No serious injuries were reported from the accident.  It is likely that the man will face additional charges as a part of attempting to flee police as well as crashing his vehicle into an undercover police vehicle.
