The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia is holding week long events around the Schulykill River area to promote yielding to pedestrians and urging motorists to be cautious around bicycle riders.

The events of raising awareness have occurred as a result of a bicycle accident last week that seriously injured a young boy and his father. The two were attempting to cross at a pedestrian crossing when they were struck by a car that failed to properly yield. Bicycle advocates are using this accident as a rallying call to everyone about the protection that is needed for pedestrians and bicycle riders across the city.

The accident was on the morning of May 20th.  The driver of the vehicle reportedly failed to yield at an intersection.  This failure to yield caused a collision between his vehicle and a semitrailer truck.  The driver died at the scene.

A passenger in the vehicle was injured as well.  The passenger was rushed to a hospital where he is being treated for his injuries.

Accidents like this highlight the importance of obeying all traffic laws, and be careful when merging with an intersection.

Child Seriously Hurt in Hit and Run

Posted on May 13th, 2009 No Comments

A young child was seriously hurt in a Hit-and-Run accident that occurred on Mother's Day.

The child , who is only six years-old, was struck by a vehicle while near the road. The vehicle that struck the child then fled the scene.  Witnesses of the accident then tried to attempt to chase the vehicle in an effort to get the drivers license number or apprehend the suspect.

The child was rushed to a hospital soon after the accident.  The mother of the child was also taken to the hospital, as the event caused her to faint at the scene of the accident.

It is sad that an event like this would take place on Mother's Day, which is normally a wonderful time.
