A Philadelphia man was killed in Franklin Township, Pa., when he tried to cross a busy street Wednesday evening, authorities said. The 61-year-old former resident of the town had purchased a six-pack of beer before attempting to cross the busy street. He was hit and killed instantly by a tractor-trailer, authorities said.

The truck driver was unaware of the accident until he stopped about a block down the road to check on mechanical problems, police said. Authorities said he called 911 when he saw the damage to the front of his vehicle.

A 60-year-old man died in a fire early Wednesday morning that ripped through his Olney, Pa., home, authorities said. His two adult sons escaped the flames. They were awakened around 4:40 a.m. by the fire alarm. The blaze had broken out in the living room, and the man became trapped in the living room. One sun escaped to the roof, where firefighters rescued him.

The other son ran for the garden hose to help save his father, authorities said, but his father was pronounced dead shortly after 5 a.m. when the fire was brought under control. The fire commissioner said the fire alarm was poorly placed. He said that it might have sounded an alarm earlier if it had been closer to the ceiling.
