A circus elephant at Irem Shrine Circus recently startled and kicked a groomer in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., authorities said, throwing him 20 feet. The impact killed the groomer, authorities said, who was pronounced dead on the scene.
The circus was not open at the time, and circus employees said the elephant posed no danger to the public. Reports say the elephant was startled after coming into contact with some electrical wires. Other trainers were able to calm the animal shortly after the accident. Police said the investigation of the workplace accident was turned over to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased.
