A man was listed in good condition Monday in Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia after a motorcycle accident Friday afternoon.

According to officials with the Pennsylvania State Police, 54 year-old Michael Rose, of Lafayette Hill, was injured when he struck a concrete bridge while riding his 2010 Harley-Davidson Street Glide motorcycle on the north side of Skippack Pike shortly after 12:00 p.m. Friday.  Police say Rose was heading west on Skippack Pike/Route 73, just east of Gravel Pike/Route 29, when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road and struck the bridge.

Rose was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but suffered major injuries, police say. He was transported by MedEvac helicopter to Hahnemann for treatment.

Route 73 was closed between Gravel Pike and Haldeman Road for 45 while police investigated the accident.

Driver in Fatal Megabus Crash Distracted by GPS

Posted on September 15th, 2010 No Comments

Police say a Philadelphia bus accident, which left four people dead, was caused by driver error.

According to officials with the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department, the driver of a Megabus that hit a bridge was distracted by a GPS device at the time of the accident. Investigators are trying to determine if 59 year-old John Tomaszewski was holding the device or listening to it at the time of the accident. The GPS device was his own, not the system installed on the double-decker bus.

The bus crashed into a railway bridge after making a wrong turn off Interstate 81 shortly before 2:30 a.m. Saturday. The double-decker was en route to Toronto from Philadelphia carrying 28 passengers.

Four people were killed in the accident. The names of the victims has not been released.

Study: Philadelphia Drivers Among Worst in U.S.

Posted on September 7th, 2010 No Comments

A new study indicates that Philadelphia has some of the worst drivers in America.

According to an annual survey published by Allstate Insurance Company, Philadelphia drivers will be involved in an accident once every 6.5. The report, titled Americas Best Drivers, shows motorists in Philadelphia are 54 percent more likely to be involved in a crash than the average American.

The report also details the safest cities in which to drive. Fort Collins, Colorado topped the list, with 14.5 years between collisions. Chattanooga, Tennessee; Boise, Idaho; Colorado Springs; and Knoxville, Tennessee were runners up.

Allstate emphasizes staying focused and maintaining a positive attitude while driving. “Human error is the biggest cause of accidents,” said Mike Roche, Allstate’s senior Vice President for claims. “It is vital for us to educate drivers across the country on the importance of being tolerant and attentive behind the wheel.”
