A man in Pennsylvania has been sentenced to one to two years in prison for a Philadelphia car accident that killed an elderly couple.

According to court documents, 45 year-old Russell Dawson of Philadelphia was ordered to four years probation and up to 500 hours of community service, which he will spend helping seniors, at the request of the victims’ family.

Dawson cried in court and said he never intended to hurt anyone. Witnesses said Dawson’s van attempted to make a left turn from the right lane on August 25 and collided with the vehicle of by 91 year-old Robert Clayton and his wife, 84 year-old Ann Clayton. The couple had been married for 63 years.

Dawson pleaded guilty in April to two counts of homicide by vehicle. Alfred Falcione, Dawson’s attorney, asked the judge for leniency in sentencing, saying his client’s act was not malicious.
