Three dead in crash near Franklin Mills Road

Posted on January 6th, 2012 No Comments

A one-car crash near Franklin Mills Road on Wednesday night claimed the lives of two teenagers and a 20 year-old.

Law enforcement believes the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when the vehicle hit a curb and flipped several times. The 20 year-old driver and his 18 year-old friend, a recent graduate of Northeast Philadelphia High School, were both thrown from the vehicle and were not wearing seatbelts. The other passenger, a 15 year-old girl, was trapped inside and was later pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness estimated the car was traveling at least 70 to 75 mph before the driver lost control. Investigators are awaiting toxicology results to determine if alcohol was also a factor in the crash.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the young victims.

Study: Driver Error Accounts for Most Teen Car Accidents

Posted on April 14th, 2011 No Comments

A new study shows driver error accounts for the majority of car accidents involving teenagers.

A study of about 800 serious car accidents involving teen drivers found that inexperience and distraction, not reckless driving or alcohol, caused the collisions. “This study shows the vast majority of crashes occur not because the teen drivers are behaving badly, but because they have not yet developed the crucial skills they need,” said Allsion Curry, director of epidemiology at the Center for Injury Research and Prevention at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Curry and her colleagues examined 795 serious collisions involving 822 teen drivers, using a nationally representative federal database. According to the study, 76 percent of the car accidents were due to critical teen driving error.

Three common errors accounted for nearly half of all serious collsions: lack of “scanning” the road, driving too fast for conditions, and being distracted by something inside or outside the vehicle.

Camden Man Killed in Possible DUI/OUI Crash

Posted on March 30th, 2011 No Comments

A Camden man was killed in a Philadelphia car accident late Tuesday.

According to officials with the Philadelphia Police Department, 50 year-old Venustiano Vidals Gonzaga was pronounced dead at the scene of a crash on Richmond Street near East Schiller Street shortly after 11:00 p.m. Tuesday. Police say alcohol or another intoxicant is believed to have been a factor in the collision.

According to the accident report, a 2009 GMC van driven by a 19 year-old man collided with Gonzaga’s 1996 Ford Windstar with such force that the minivan became wrapped around a utility pole. After hitting the minivan, the GMC van ran into another utility pole, snapping the wooden pillar, before flipping on its side.

The injured driver and a passenger, who was described as a paraplegic, were transported to Temple University Hospital for treatment. They are expected to make a full recovery.

Police say the 19 year-old van driver is being tested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and friends during this difficult time.
