Pfizer, Inc. recalls 1 million packs of birth control

Last week, Pfizer, Inc., the nation’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturer, recalled 1 million packs of Lo/Ovral-28 and generic Norgestrel; The 28-day birth control packs could contain the incorrect amount of pills, according to the company.
Officials found that a packaging error when the drug was manufactured could have caused some of the recalled packs to contain too many or too few active, hormone pills, and the same for inert, sugar pills. Patients taking the birth control are supposed to take 21 days of hormone pills, followed by 7 days of sugar pills to prevent pregnancy.
However, if a patient’s birth control pack does not contain the correct amount or sequence of pills, they are at risk of becoming pregnant. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says that the pills do not pose any immediate health threat other than unintended pregnancy, and advises women taking the recalled birth control to contact their physician immediately.

J&J issues recall of 57,000 bottles of Topamax

Last month, Johnson & Johnson issued a recall of 57,000 bottles of Topamax after receiving four consumer reports that the product had an uncharacteristic odor. The recalled product involves 100 mg tablets of the antiepilepsy drug sold in 60 tablet bottles. Only around 6,000 bottles of the product were said to have been on the market at the time of the recall.
Investigators believe the odor comes from trace amounts of tribromoanisole, or TBA. TBA is a chemical byproduct from a wood preservative often used on product transportation and storage pallets. Some gastrointestinal problems could occur if a product contaminated with TBA is ingested.
