Listeria outbreak from cantaloupe could spread to Pennsylvania

Posted on Tuesday, September 20th, 2011 at 8:17 pm

A Colorado farm recently recalled cantaloupes sold in at least 17 states, including Pennsylvania, after they discovered that their cantaloupes were contaminated with listeria. Consumers are warned not to consume cantaloupes with the Rocky Ford brand.

The bacteria found in the cantaloupes can cause listeriosis–an illness marked by digestive problems, muscle pain, and fever.  Pregnant women, people with compromised immune systems, and the elderly are the most likely to be affected by listeria.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has received reports of 35 illnesses and four deaths suspected to be caused by the contaminated cantaloupes.  None of the reports came from people living in Pennsylvania, but officials warn that they did come from nearby states like West Virginia.
