Worker wins $19M in case against apartment complex

Posted on Tuesday, February 21st, 2012 at 3:47 pm

A jury recently awarded a floor refinishing worker almost $19 million in a lawsuit he filed against an apartment complex and its managers. The 37-year-old worker was hired by the complex to repair floors, and suffered severe burn injuries while lacquering one apartment’s flooring in July 2003.

When the plaintiff was lacquering the floor, the apartment’s gas-fired stove caused vapors from the lacquer to ignite. The apartment caught fire, and while attempting to run out, the worker slipped on the floor, causing him to also catch on fire. According to the lawsuit, the apartment managers were aware that he would be lacquering the floors that day and that they should have turned off the gas.

The worker suffered second- and third-degree burns on more than half of his body and needed more than 20 surgeries to treat his injuries. Experts testified that the plaintiff continues to experience pain from the burns and developed post-traumatic stress disorder after the accident.

Over 50 go to hospital after light fixture breaks at area high school

Posted on Tuesday, December 6th, 2011 at 3:32 pm

This week, more than 50 people have sought treatment at hospitals in Philadelphia for eye irritation caused by a broken light fixture at Father Judge High School in Frankford.

The high school hosted a cheerleading competition on Sunday.  Between 5 and 10 cheerleaders at the competition were the first to report experiencing eye irritation and were taken to multiple emergency rooms.

Yesterday, dozens of people who attended the competition were still being treated for eye irritation.

Early Monday morning, investigators arrived at the school to determine what was causing the irritation.  At around 7 a.m., officials determined that a sodium light fixture in the auditorium broke and released a hazardous gas.

Two of the hospital emergency rooms that treated the people with eye irritation were quarartined.  The school was already scheduled to be closed on Monday.

A 37-year old business owner who suffered multiple injuries while volunteering with Central Christian Church and Armor Ministries in Mexico was recently awarded $5,647,750 in a lawsuit filed against the church and ministry.

The man was injured in 2006 while working on constructing a roof on a church in Mexico as a volunteer with Central Christian Church and Arbor Ministries.  The accident occurred when the man stepped on a rafter board that collapsed under his weight and he fell 10 feet onto a concrete floor.

In the fall, the man suffered a traumatic brain injury and back injuries including fractured vertebrae.  According to the lawsuit, the man’s injuries caused him to lose hearing in one ear, lose some of his sense of taste and smell, and experience problems with operating his business.

Central Christian Church was found to be 80 percent liable for the accident, Armor Ministries was found to be 15 percent liable, and Day was found to be 5 percent liable.

Woman slips on slurpee in Costco, suffers spinal and shoulder injuries

Posted on Tuesday, August 30th, 2011 at 7:07 pm

A 74-year old New York woman has filed suit against Costco Wholesale Corp. over a slip and fall accident at one of their stores in Florida.  The woman says she slipped on a spilled slurpee at the store in North Miami, fell, and suffered serious spinal and shoulder injuries.

“I didn’t know what hit me, I just went flying.  I went up in the air and down I went,” said the plaintiff.  She needed treatment from a chiropractor for months after the accident at Costco.

After filing suit, Costco attempted to hold the case in Florida arguing that it would be too costly to travel to New York.  However, a judge in Brooklyn recently ruled that the case would stay in New York because it would be easier for the woman injured in the slip and fall accident.

4 restaurant patrons burned in fire

Posted on Tuesday, June 14th, 2011 at 7:58 pm

4 restaurant patrons eating at the Ozona Blue Grilling Co. in Palm Harbor, Florida suffered burn injuries in a fire at the restaurant over the weekend.  The fire was started during a tableside preparation of bananas foster.

The dessert is prepared by pouring liquor over the top and setting it on fire.  Investigators believe the 28-year old waiter preparing the dessert may have brought the bottle of liquor too close to the flaming dessert, causing the flames from the dessert to catch the 151-proof alcohol inside the bottle on fire.

The waiter lost his grip on the bottle when it caught fire and some of the flaming liquid from the bottle was sent flying onto 4 people at the restaurant.  A 25-year old woman was most seriously injured with first, second, and third degree burns.  Paramedics rushed her to Tampa General Hospital in a helicopter for treatment.
