Employee loses leg in Wilkes-Barre workplace accident

Posted on June 7th, 2011 No Comments

Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials are investigating a workplace accident at the Mountain Productions facility in Wilkes Barre on Frederick Street.

The accident occurred last month when workers were moving large pipe with a piece of machinery.  Something went wrong while moving the pipe and it fell on an employee, severing his leg.  The worker was taken to the trauma unit at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center were doctors amputated the leg.

Investigators are trying to figure out if the machinery used to transport the pipe was defective or if any workplace safety violations were committed.

Worker Dies at Queens, NY Dry Cleaning Plant

Posted on March 3rd, 2011 No Comments

A New York woman was crushed to death last week at a dry cleaning plant where she worked.

According to officials with the New York City Police Department, Limin Min Huang was feeding towels into a flatwork ironer at the An Huan Laundry plant in Jamaica, Queens, when her scarf got caught in the machine. Police say the machine pulled her in and crushed her before stopping. Huang had worked at the plant for three years.

Huang’s family attorney, David Perecman, told reporters he would be investigating the circumstances surrounding her death. “Huang’s type of workplace accident is unfortunately not rare,” Perecman said. “Most machinery can also be dangerous if it is not maintained, protected, or used properly. Dangerous machines can cause life-changing injuries to people. In the most serious of cases, workers have been killed by dangerous machinery.”

No charges have been filed in connection with Huang’s death. The incident remains under investigation by the New York Police Department.

2 AmeriCold Workers Injured by Machinery

Two AmeriCold employees were rushed to the hospital Monday morning after being trapped by machinery.

According to officials with the Manchester Police Department, a 1,000 pound dock plate trapped a worker at the East Manchester Township shipping and refrigeration company shortly after 3:10 a.m. A second worker was injured as he attempted to free the trapped employee.

Company officials explained a dock plate as “an adjustable metal ramp used to bridge the gap created between a truck and the floors of the dock when a truck had backed up for loading at the loading dock.”

Emergency response crews rushed the two men to an area hospital for treatment. One worker is listed in critical condition. The other man was treated and released.

The identities of the two men have not been released.

17 Injured in Pittsburgh Steel Plant Explosion

Posted on July 14th, 2010 No Comments

Seventeen people were injured at a U.S. Steel plant near Pittsburgh when an oven exploded Wednesday, emergency officials said.

According to Allegheny County spokesman Kevin Evanto said the powerful blast in the coke oven at United States STeel Corp.’s Clairton Coke Works happened shortly after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Most of the workers suffered burns, Evanto said.

“It’s a miracle that anybody even walked away from that,” Allegheny County Emergency Services Chief Bob Full said.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration had a team of investigators on the site looking into the cause of the explosion. Allegheny County Air Quality Program manager Jim Thompson said a large cloud of smoke seen at the plant and other factors indicate the explosion may have been caused by the gas used to heat one of the coke ovens.

Worker’s disability benefits repealed

Posted on May 21st, 2010 No Comments

A Pennsylvania worker’s compensation payment was appealed by her employer. The Pennsylvania Workers’ Compensation Appeal Board sided with the employer, citing untimeliness on the worker’s behalf.

The worker had originally won a compensation payment following a disc herniation and radiculopathy case due to work-related strain on May 25, 2007. The injury occurred after the worker had manually cleaned 42 tanning beds and complained of numbness in her right arm and fingers and extreme pain in her shoulder. The judge originally awarded temporary total disability benefits to the worker.

That decision was reversed after the board revisited the circumstances of the worker’s complaint. The employee discussed an injury, not an injury specifically tied to work circumstances, with an administrator on May 31, 2007. Without disclosing that her injuries were work-related, a letter sent on October 11, 2007 by the worker to her employer reporting the injury was found as an insufficient warning of her disability. The date of injury and date of actual disclosure exceeded 120 days, leading the board to side with the employer. Under Section 311 of the Workers’ Compensation Act, she was denied her benefits.

This case illustrates the need for professionalism and timeliness in dealing with workers’ compensation. If you or someone you love has been injured, you may be entitled to compensation. Contact the Philadelphia personal injury lawyers at Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C., by calling 215-238-1130 today.

Elephant kicks, kills groomer

Posted on April 30th, 2010 No Comments

A circus elephant at Irem Shrine Circus recently startled and kicked a groomer in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., authorities said, throwing him 20 feet. The impact killed the groomer, authorities said, who was pronounced dead on the scene.

The circus was not open at the time, and circus employees said the elephant posed no danger to the public. Reports say the elephant was startled after coming into contact with some electrical wires. Other trainers were able to calm the animal shortly after the accident. Police said the investigation of the workplace accident was turned over to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased.
