Last week, a 6-year old girl from Lawrence Township, Ohio went to the hospital after her neighbor’s dog bit her. The young girl needed 35 stitches to repair injuries to her face.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, at around 8 p.m. on Thursday, a black Labrador Retriever from the neighbor’s house, which the girl had played with before, walked over to the 6-year old’s home and stood outside a sliding glass door. The girl opened the door to pet the dog, and the animal attacked, biting her face.

The 6-year old was taken to the emergency room at Children’s Hospital in Columbus. Police, the dog’s owners, and witnesses to the attack are unsure of what led the dog to bite, but they are investigating the incident.

Authorities recently reported that the death toll from the crash of the Costa Concordia cruise ship off of the Italian coast increased to 11. The ship was operated by Costa Cruises, a company owned by Carnival Cruise Lines.

Officials from the cruise ship company have blamed the fatal accident on the ship’s captain. According to the company, the captain did not follow the approved course by directing the vessel too close to the rocky shores of the Italian island, Giglio. He is currently being investigated for manslaughter.

4,200 people were aboard the ship, which crashed just hours after the cruise began last Friday evening. Rescue crews are still searching for 24 missing passengers and crew members.

Two weeks ago, Honda announced the expansion of their recall of vehicles with the potential for airbag defects by 273,000 vehicles. Initially, Honda recalled 603,000 vehicles.

The recall involves mostly older model vehicles. Models include Civics, Accords, CRVs, Odysseys, Pilots, and Acuras. Honda has asked all of its dealers to stop selling models included on the recall list until they are tested for the airbag defect.

Investigators have found that some Honda vehicles use too much pressure to inflate the airbag, sending pieces of metal and plastic around the airbag into the air and at drivers and passengers. Honda has received reports of 12 injuries and at least 1 death related to the automobile defect.

A one-car crash near Franklin Mills Road on Wednesday night claimed the lives of two teenagers and a 20 year-old.

Law enforcement believes the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when the vehicle hit a curb and flipped several times. The 20 year-old driver and his 18 year-old friend, a recent graduate of Northeast Philadelphia High School, were both thrown from the vehicle and were not wearing seatbelts. The other passenger, a 15 year-old girl, was trapped inside and was later pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness estimated the car was traveling at least 70 to 75 mph before the driver lost control. Investigators are awaiting toxicology results to determine if alcohol was also a factor in the crash.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the young victims.

Last week, a jury in Bucks County awarded the victim of a bus accident $14 million. The jury gave $11.1 million for the young woman’s pain, suffering, and disfigurement, and $3 million for her past and future medical expenses.

The plaintiff was injured when a Pennsbury school bus ran over her in January 2007. Several other high school students were also hit by the bus when its driver pushed down on the accelerator, instead of the brake.

Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board and the Falls Police Department found the cause of the accident to be driver error. The Pennsbury School District accepted liability in the accident before the case went to trial.

The then-17-year old girl was in a medically induced coma for a month after the accident. Her leg and hip were crushed when she was dragged underneath the school bus, and her left leg was amputated above the knee.

This week, more than 50 people have sought treatment at hospitals in Philadelphia for eye irritation caused by a broken light fixture at Father Judge High School in Frankford.

The high school hosted a cheerleading competition on Sunday. Between 5 and 10 cheerleaders at the competition were the first to report experiencing eye irritation and were taken to multiple emergency rooms.

Yesterday, dozens of people who attended the competition were still being treated for eye irritation.

Early Monday morning, investigators arrived at the school to determine what was causing the irritation. At around 7 a.m., officials determined that a sodium light fixture in the auditorium broke and released a hazardous gas.

Two of the hospital emergency rooms that treated the people with eye irritation were quarartined. The school was already scheduled to be closed on Monday.

A New York man was recently awarded $9 million in a lawsuit concerning the severe auto injuries he suffered after being struck by a New York City bus.

The accident occurred in 2006 when the 39-year old bicyclist was riding on 10th Avenue near West 44th Street. According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff fell off his bicycle in an attempt to avoid hitting a door than was being opened on a parked taxicab. A number of defendants were named in the suit, including the taxi driver, the cab company, the bus operator, and several transportation agencies.

When the bus hit the bicyclist, he was dragged across about one third of the block. The man suffered serious injuries and fractures. After five surgeries, several weeks of hospitalization and therapy, and a year of nursing home care, the plaintiff still lives in pain and has a permanent leg deformation.

The jury found the cab driver and cab company 30 percent liable for the man’s injuries and the other defendants 70 percent liable. In total, $9,180,000 was awarded to the plaintiff — $6,000,000 for past medical expenses and pain and suffering and $3,180,000 for future pain and suffering.
